J. DANIEL BAKER, DELAWARE HAYES
1988 RECIPIENT

Only coach to reach the state finals in two different classifications. Northwestern in 1959 and Marion Harding in 1963. Dan coached the North-South Cage Classic twice, 1958 and 1977. He was Co-Director of the North-South Cage Classic six years when it was held in Marion, Ohio. Dan was active in the OHSBCA, having served as a director for a number of years. Coach Baker held stints at Northwestern, Marion Harding, Cleveland Mayfield and concluded his career at Delaware Hayes High School for a total of thirty years of coaching. During his era, Dan brought many first-time championships to the schools he served including a state championship, 29-0 record at Northwestern in 1958-59, state semifinalist in 1959-60 and state finalist in 1962-63. Dan's former wife, Mrs. Mary Fierbaugh, resides in Delaware and a son, Joe, a doctor, resides in Sandusky, Ohio.
